RACE REPORT: ENGLISH & BOND WIN DOWNIEVILLE

July 12, 2011

It was yet another amazing racing weekend for the Ride Giant-Ride Northstar mountain bike team at the Downieville Classic and the opening downhill race series at Northstar-at-Tahoe this past weekend.

Lizzy English: 2011 Pro-Women's Downieville All Mountain Champion

Ride Giant-Ride Northstar riders Lizzy English and Mason Bond demonstrated great performance from their hard work in training and discipline to become 2011 Downieville All Mountain Champions.

Lizzy English’s flying speed on Sunday’s downhill earned her enough points combined with her second place finish in the xc race to take the overall victory to become the 2011 professional woman all mountain champion.

“The Giant Bicycle  Trance Advanced SL was the perfect bike choice for  Downieville.” “This bike is so stiff, I can confidently push the limits in the corners, keeping me upright.”

The winning machine: Giant Trance Advanced SL. Featuring Foxing Racing Shox Talas 150 and Shimano All Mountain XTR Drivetrain and Brake Systems.

Lizzy English’s victory was also accomplished by the great support from Giro and Oakley. English wears the women’s Giro Sica shoes and the Atmos helmet. The Sica shoes provided great power transfer to the pedals while being comfortable and fitting like a glove. Oakley provided sniper vision with the MX-O Frame goggles which allowed Lizzy to clearly see the technical lines and get down safely.

Mason Bond, a JR. X level competitor was back with a vengeance on his Giant Reign after flatting at the Bend strop of the Oregon Super-D Series and put down a great effort with a 2nd place finish in day one of the Downieville cross country event and won the downhill event on Sunday. Both performances earn him the title of the Downieville All-Mountain Champion.

Mason’s fitness is beginning to blossom and will become a strong contender against other competitors for the stars and stripes jersey in Sun Valley this weekend at National Championships.

Other great performances were set out by Karin Edwards, John Hurley, Ryan Icanberry and Stephen Berg at Downieville.

Karin placed 2nd in cat. 2 women’s cross country while John finished 7th overall in all-mountain placing against a very competitive field in the cat.1 35 over group. Ryan Icanberry accomplished a 23rd place out of 90 competitors in the Cat. 1 category cross country event while Stephen placed 15th in the Cat. 2 cross country event out of 46 competitors. The former All Mountain Downieville Champion Nate Byrom also competed in the event but unfortunately had some bad luck and had a rough crash.

Pro-Rider Jon Wilson

It was a great day of racing for the Northstar/Giant team, and what better place than their home resort.  Boondocks provided a compliment of rugged, technical rock sections, high speed straights, and even a little pedaling.

Brad Howell placed 3rd in the Sport 39 and under class, just a second off of second place.  Sam Redman placed 5th in the Junior Sport category.  After winning the Northstar series title last year in Sport, Bobby Beaupre made the jump to Expert 39 where his hard work paid off with a win. Other team riders in sport, Dan Gillooley placed second in the 19-29 age group.

Dan says, “In Friday’s practice I smashed my chain guide, chain ring, and chain beyond the point of use on a good sized rock. I didn’t have $200 to repair it all, so I just decided to go chainless for the weekend. On Saturday’s race I raced chainless and just cruised the whole way down. I placed 2nd in Sport 19-29… I know that if I had a chain and had actually been trying to race I could have easily knocked off 15-20 seconds.” This kid is an animal!

Andrea Napoli followed in fashion with a win in the Female 30 class. Another heated class filled with Northstar/Giant riders, Expert 29, saw Cody Chapman in 3rd, Erik Hatch 4th, and Jordan Hartman in 8th!

Andrea on the podium again. She is killing it.

Jon Wilson rallied in the Pro class to a 4th place finish just two seconds off third.

A big thanks to all our sponsors Northstar-at-Tahoe, Giant Bicycles, Fox Shox, Shimano, Giro, and our team manager Justin Swett!  We couldn’t do it without you!

Good job and thanks to everyone who raced.  This next weekend will be the XC and Super D National championships in Sun Valley, Idaho!  Good luck to everyone!
